There are actually 2 kinds of forklifts, predicated whether or not they run on gas or electricity:

IC or Internal Combustion Forklifts: The IC lift truck would run on fuels such as gas, liquid propane, compressed natural gas or CNG or diesel. Gas powered units are best suited for outdoor use because they emit pollutants and gases that are harmful to workers and pedestrians. Gas units are also suitable for use in the rain and in bad weather. These models can carry weights about 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. Because of the fuel expenses and maintenance, models which run on gas are more costly to use than the electric models, although, they cost less up front than electric powered units. Models which run on liquid propane are the best choice for safe use inside.

Electric Lift Trucks: Electric lift trucks take batteries that require regular charging. Since these units do not burn any fuel, there are no emissions polluting the air with these vehicles. They are the best choice for warehouses and indoor applications. Additionally, forklifts which run on electricity are a lot quieter to run than other models and they do not require any fuel storage units. Amongst the disadvantages of the electric models is that they are unable to lift loads over 15,000 pounds and thus, have a slower acceleration than the units which use gasoline.

Forklifts are specially designed to easily and quickly transport heavy loads with ease. Like the case with nearly all kinds of machinery, unfortunately, lift truck accidents do happen on a regular basis. There are some safety regulations which must be followed so as to keep everybody safe. The most essential issue is recruiting a trained operator, who can show you a valid lift truck license.

There are many different styles of lift trucks offered on the market. Choosing which one is best for your specific needs would be based on the kinds of loads which you need to transport, what type of environment your equipment would have to operate in, like for example, indoors or outdoors or both. Once you understand your particular requirements, it would be easy to match up to the best type of lift truck. When you understand your requirements exactly you could make the best decision.

Another great way to get first hand experience on the different forklift units is the try renting your lift truck. This will also enable you to see all the possible choices available to you. This is a cheaper way to determine if the machinery you have chosen could keep up with you on the job site.
